Guide to Tasmania – Gourmet, Wildlife & Wilderness

Australia is an amazing country that many travelers love to come back to every year. There’s just so much to discover and each trip back to this beautiful country brings a new perspective and experience tourists never thought possible. One of the best vacation destinations when you’re in Australia is Tasmania.

The wonders that dot the vast countryside are plenty, and the East Coast of Tasmania is a must-visit when you’re there. There are several tour packages that offer self-drive adventures. In Tasmania, there’s just so much to do!

Driving through Nature & Wildlife

Declared as one of the top must-visit places in 2015 by Lonely Planet, Tasmania is a spectacular region known for its world-class cultural, natural, gourmet, and heritage experiences.

A self-driving trip here would be a fulfilling experience. You can choose to begin your drive through to the old-world village of Richmond. Here you get to see the sights of Australia’s oldest freestone road bridge built by convicts in 1823 and Australia’s oldest Roman Catholic Church. This historical landmark marks your first stop.

Next, drive leisurely through to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, a sanctuary that specializes in the care and rehabilitation of orphaned and injured wildlife. Visitors get an up-close and personal experience that would be hard to match. Get to learn about some of species that are sadly now extinct everywhere but Tasmania, which include the Tasmanian Devil, the Eastern Quoll, the Tasmanian Pademelon and the shy Tasmanian Bettong.

After a one-of-a-kind experience at the sanctuary, take an hour’s drive to Curringa Farm, where you can then choose to spend the night. Day tours offer visitors an authentic view of a sheep and cropping farm. See working farm dogs, sheep shearing and environmentally friendly farming practices. Curringa Farm stretches over 300 hectares and is close to Mt Field National Park. This priceless experience will leave you amazed at how much Tasmania has to offer.

Cradle Mountain is another incredible destination we highly recommend to travelers. It’s surrounding natural beauty makes this an iconic landmark to visit when you’re in Tasmania. You can opt for day walks, visit the Dove Lake and Sheffield, which is also known as the “Town of Murals”, with artworks adorning the side of buildings throughout the town.

Tasmania’s East Coast offers beautiful beaches and amazing landscapes. With long stretches of spectacular coastal areas and amazing National Parks such as the Freycinet National Park, you will be spellbound.

The Freycinet National Park is Tasmania’s oldest national park known for its pink granite, huge boulders, incredible wildlife and is surrounded by white sandy beaches. You can trek across the park fairly easily and the walk is suitable for all ages.

Hobart is a beautiful city you should travel to. As Australia’s second oldest city, Hobart fascinates travellers with its own characteristics as you travel through antique stores, discover stunning arts and crafts as you walk through Salamanca Markets on a Saturday morning.

There are also gourmet and food tours that could interest the inner chef in you. Make time for a lunch visit to Tasmanian Gourmet Sauce Company, a production and tasting centre near Evandale, 20 minutes drive south of Launceston. Enjoy free tastings of all the different sauces and fill up you bags with a variety of berry fruit sauces, chocolate sauces, apricot chutney, Cumberland sauce and even the Thai Chilli sauce!
