Guide to Perth & Western Australia – Beaches, Wineries & Natural Bushlands

Australia features frequently here at our Jetabout Holidays blog as one of the best countries for a vacation, and for good reason – there’s huge diversity in terms of landscape and activities to do in Down Under. Within in city or region, every experience is unique. No two trips to Australia are ever the same!

Perth is Western Australia’s capital and largest city, with more than 3 million visitors to the region annually. If you’re planning a holiday to Western Australia, here are some excellent ideas for a great family holiday!

Self-drive with the family

Western Australia is a great self-drive destination like Tasmania (featured in this article) and Perth is always the best place to start with. From the airport, grab your car keys and explore Perth after your hotel check-in and spend a leisurely day out. You may choose to drive down to Rockingham to swim with the dolphins or grab a bite at the award-winning Miami Bakehouse in Mandurah.

Continue for self-drive holiday into other parts of Western Australia with this itinerary or plan a route together with a travel planner. There’s so much to see, it’s best you get the advice of a specialist to get the best out of your road trip.

Food & Culture

Busselton Jetty, with its Underwater Observatory, is a great place to admire the amazing life under the sea. And while you’re at Busselton Jetty, try the deliciously fresh ice cream at Simmo’s Ice Creamery. These heavenly, creamy desserts are locally handmade using jersey milk from local farmers.

From Busselton, it’s best to head south towards Margaret River – Western Australia’s premium wine growing region. Take the opportunity to visit some of the best wineries in Australia, Gabriel’s Chocolate Factory, Olio Bello Organic Olive Farm or the limestone caves and have dinner at one of the many excellent restaurants in town.

We recommend Morries Anytime, they’re open anytime of the day and serve great food, coffee, wines and cocktails!

Farm stay experience

If you’d like an Australian country experience, farm stays are an incredible opportunity for the whole family to bond over an incredible holiday twist. Bindoon Windmill Farm offers a great farm stay experience. Located at the head of Chittering Valley, the 40-acre property is surrounded by lush, scenic hills and bush reserves which are home to “kangaroos, wallabies, emus and a marvellous variety of birds”.

There’s something for everyone at the farm – children can feed the farm pets which includes their pet lamb and kangaroo. You can even milk a cow if you like! You also can witness sheep shearing and wool spinning demonstration, learning a little about wool along the way. If you prefer to visit the fruit orchards and explore the rest of the farm on a tractor, everything can be arranged.

There’s really no hurry when you’re on a holiday and the Bindoon Windmill Farm will take care of you with the typical Australian country hospitality – tourists have arrived on the farm as travellers and left as friends!

Wildlife parks and nature reserves

Another great spot to visit and experience nature is the many wildlife parks and nature reserves in Western Australia. One of such destinations is the Caversham Wildlife Park. Here, according to the park, you can hand-feed the kangaroos, join in the interactive farm shows, touch a possum or lizard, meet a wombat, catch a keeper talk or two and have photos taken with koalas!

Nambung National Park is where the amazing Pinnacles Desert reside. This is where thousands of limestone pillars seemingly grew from the desert grounds, forming one of the most amazing landscapes you’ll find in Western Australia. Some of the pinnacles reach up to 3.5m high!

Nambung National Park is also known for its beautiful beaches at Kangaroo Point and Hangover Bay, coastal dune systems and low heathland rich in flowering plants. You can snorkel, swim or even surf at the nearby Jurien Bay Marine Park and if you’re lucky, catch sight of bottlenose dolphins and sea lions in their natural habitat.

There’s so much to do in Perth and Western Australia. The best of Australia is all about Mother Nature, Australian culture and hospitality. All you need to do is be ready for an adventure you never thought you’ll have on a holiday – with Jetabout Holiday’s tour packages,  it’ll be a memorable vacation you’ll never forget!
