The Maldives consists of almost 1,200 coral islands spread over 90,000 square kilometres, and has always been the dream destination for families and couples to enjoy the sun, sand and sea. I recently had the opportunity to fly to the Maldives for an inspection trip, and I jumped at the opportunity.
If you’re not sure if Maldives should be your next holiday destination, here are my five reasons why it should be!
1. Maldives is magical.
Like a scene from the movies, I was greeted with white sand and blue sea even before I landed. This remarkable setting will accompany you throughout your stay on this amazing island. It was an amazing feeling just landing on the most beautiful place on earth.
Tip: The trip to Maldives is best on Singapore Airlines or Tiger Airways as these are direct flight options. It took me about 4.5 hours from Singapore to the Male Airport.
2. The seaplane ride is exceptional.
In the Maldives – the speedboat, the seaplane or domestic airplane are your main modes of transportation.
When I was staying at Angsana Velavaru, the only way to get to the beautiful two-island resort was via the seaplane. The seaplane is a 14-seater wonder, and the seat is slightly narrower than a normal plane. The plane flies low for a mind-blowing view of the nearby islands. It was an incredible experience. I landed on a floating platform where a speedboat whisked me to the resort with villas floating over the beautiful ocean.
You’ll also notice your pilot wearing shorts – a breath of fresh air from your usual Captain!
Tip: The ride was a little warm, and if you’re claustrophobic, the small-sized seaplane might not be suitable for you.
3. The destination is just as wonderful.
While on a 25-minute speedboat ride to the Angsana Ihuru Resort, the guide told me during dolphins have been sighted in the waters on the way to the resort. Imagine that!
If the journey was astounding, the resort itself was marvelous. There are two types of accommodation –a beachfront villa OR one with a jet pool. The rooms are spacious and your balcony doors open up to the beach! Life can’t get any better than this.
Tip: If you love snorkeling, this resort offers one of the best snorkeling activities. The house reef was only 50 metres away from the resort, and you’ll surely get to catch sight of the beautiful marine life. As I was a guest, equipment rental was free – a huge plus!
4. The activities are unimaginable!
I also stayed at the resort’s sister property which was just 5 minutes away by speedboat. The Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru has an incredible array of activities!
There is the manta ray feeding session daily, when these stingrays “visit” the resort every day at 5pm. If you think this sounds incredible, just watch the video above!
Tip: If you plan to stay for 4 nights here, you will receive a complimentary wedding package which includes a wedding ceremony, flower bouquet for bride and garland for groom, a one-tier wedding cake, chilled canapés, a commemorative wedding certificate AND 30 wedding photos in a CD! Oh, did I mention this is free?
5. The Maldives is an unforgettable retreat.
I went for a 90-minute massage at the Angsana Ihuru. At USD$100 per person (USD$199 per couple), I highly recommend you try their signature massage – Angsana Signature.
Tip: If you’re planning to travel to the Maldives with through a tour package, look for tour packages that incorporate everything you want – spas, accommodation, tours, and the likes. It is more affordable to get an all-inclusive package (even your drinks) and you will only need to spend very little when you’re there.
The Maldives holiday you take will be a guaranteed trip to paradise. You’ll just want to relax, unwind and enjoy the beauty of the island and experience the best vacation you’ll ever take.
