Award Winning Indonesian Resort Nihiwatu.. is under new ownership

7th April 2017 – J. Christopher Burch, founder and CEO of Burch Creative Capital, an entrepreneur and active investor across a wide range of industries for nearly thirty years acquired Nihiwatu on the Indonesian island of Sumba in 2013 in partnership with acclaimed hotelier James McBride.  Mr. Burch has been a strategic investor in multiple technology and luxury brands, including  C. Wonder, Aliph (Jawbone), NextJump, PowerMat, Voss Water and Tory Burch.

The exquisite 33 villa estate Nihiwatu is located on Sumba Island, a mere 55 minute flight East of Bali, offering its guests absolute privacy, appropriate luxury, spectacular scenery and one of the best waves in the world-in short an un-touched exclusive hideaway in the “Archipelago of the Extraordinary.”

Situated in a protected environment, Nihiwatu is a sanctuary to all who stay and offers much more than a holiday destination.  Nihiwatu opens guests up to the unparalleled nature surrounding them. Visitors may either experience a choice of outdoor activities (fishing, diving, horse-riding, boating and yoga/ spa) or, just relax in perfect tranquility

“Nihiwatu is a rarity today. The opportunity we have been given to continue the work of its creators Claude and Petra Graves is tremendous. We want to spread the word about this extraordinary place, the island of Sumba and its people for generations to come. Our aim is to evolve into one of the best resorts in world, whilst demonstrating a successful and sustainable operation with the environment and the Sumbanese people,” commented Chris Burch

One of today’s best possible examples of sustainable tourism (Grand Award for Environmental Tourism PATA & Best Responsible Hotel Development HICAP), Nihiwatu has captured the hearts and minds of its new owners who are entirely committed to continuing the work of the charitable trust, The Sumba Foundation. Established in 2001, the Foundation extends support to 20,000 islanders and provides clean water supply to villages whilst addressing malnutrition and education needs on Sumba. 90% of the foundation’s donations come from hotel guests and all of the distributions are made directly to the local Sumbanese community.

The thatched private villas are set within a 580 acre estate comprising forested areas, open savannah and expanses of rice terraces of which only 65 acres are developed.  The pristine, fine-grained pink and beige hues of Nihiwatu’s adjacent sandy beach extends to two and a half kilometers (1.6 miles) in length with cliff headlands at each end providing an exclusivity unmatched anywhere in Indonesia.

Nihiwatu’s origin has to some degree evolved around “The Wave,” recognised as one of the best left-hand surf breaks in the world.  The founders of Nihiwatu, Claude and Petra Graves who arrived on Sumba in 1988 wished to protect it from becoming overpopulated and set about to carefully manage access to a maximum of ten surfers at any given time. As a result of protecting land and sea, Sumba has gained a cult status in the international surfing community.

It is rare for luxury in environment and philanthropy to co-exist in such perfect harmony; great care has always been taken to consult with the Sumbanese to ensure that everything at Nihiwatu is done to respect beliefs.

From a historical and cultural perspective, Sumba is the home of one of the world’s last intact Animist cultures: to witness Sumbanese culture is like looking through a window to the past. One of the most culturally interesting places in the world, on Sumba faith in old traditions is very strong.

Nihiwatu extends a starting rate of USD1,000++ per room per night, including full board accommodation, Wi-Fi internet, mini-bar, laundry, daily excursions and activities on land, non-motorized sea activities, scheduled group yoga & meditation classes at the Yoga Pavilion. Rates are based on a minimum 3-night stay in an entry-level villa during Shoulder season.

Garuda Indonesia currently operates a daily flight from Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport to Sumba Island (50 minutes).

Pokémon Go – what’s all the fuss?

If you see bunches of people strolling around or in circles, in parks, below HDB flats or train stations, they’re probably trying to catch one of those Pidgeotto or Rattatta. Even I myself am one of them and right now in my own journey, I’m a stage 7 trainer of Team Mystic.

You know life has changed when everyone at home, work or school have eyes glued to the phone searching for virtual critters lurking around. This is THE sight screaming Pokémon GO has made its way to our little red dot! Mark this date forever- its release on August 8th 2016.

Quick Facts about Pokemon Go

Pokemon Go was initially released in certain countries such as Australia and US last July 2016.

The excitement and fuss is about how augmented reality game encourages you to become a better player using real world geography as your map to locate, capture, battle and train your hidden Pokemon – cartoon characters made popular in the 1990s on your phone screen. This is even more fun done with friends or fellow players near you (and family? wink wink) as you travel all over Singapore.

Over the past few weeks, extraordinary Pokémon -related stories have never failed to amuse us as they make their way to news’ headlines, like the time how players flocks in a single location and another time when someone quits job to be a full-time Pokémon trainer

Whether you are a Pokémon trainer destined catch ’em all or looking to level up as the most powerful, the game sticks true to Pokémon’s theme catchy phrase – “You teach me and I’ll teach you (Po-ke-mo-on)”. Playing Pokémon has a different experience for every player, and this app doesn’t come with detailed instructions, making it instinctive. All you need to do is throw the ball to catch one. Trainers are encouraged to help each other, and today we will talk about how to level up even when you’re traveling.

Still confused with playing the game? Simply follow these best 4 tips to level up shared by an experienced Pokémon trainer:-

  • Evolve all of pidgey, weedle and caterpie you’ve been catching unintentionally
  • Use your lucky eggs and hatch ’em all
  • Visit parks or malls where you’ll find certain type of Pokémon
  • Travel with friends now that it gets interesting

Enough said… Tell me how to catch ’em all during my travel already

The World’s First Luxury Thai Hammam

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]matara Resort & Wellness, Phuket, has launched the world’s first luxury Thai Hammam. Blending together traditional Turkish and Moroccan bathing practices with the wisdom and gentleness of authentic Thai spa healing arts, the treatment combines the sensations of pampering, soaking, exfoliating, cleansing, contrasting temperatures, deep massage and calming rejuvenation.

The Thai Hammam Experience at Amatara starts with a traditional sauna followed by a waterfall or jet blast rinse to cool down the body temperature. The guests is then escorted into the Hammam room to have an intensive hair treatment together with a scalp massage before going into the Thai herbal steam room to soften skin and relax muscles. Once the skin is softened, the guest indulges in a full body massage and exfoliation atop an internally warmed stone bed. The Thai Hammam massage is a luxurious combination of 100% organic natural products and therapeutic massage with a strong Thai influence.

The next step in the journey is a deeply soothing, healing and detoxifying thermal mud bath. The body is completely covered with therapeutic mud, while the guest relaxes on an internally heated stone bench. The pores of the skin are open from the heat of the mudroom and the previous stages of the Hammam process, and the dead skin removed, allowing the minerals of the mud to be absorbed into the body. This is not only wonderfully detoxifying and soothing for the skin, it helps to reduce inflammation in the body, thus reducing aches, pains and muscular stiffness. After several minutes, a gentle steam infuses the mud room, softening the mud in order to be easily rinsed off.

After rinsing, guests rest in a soothing Himalayan Salt cave relaxation zone. Negative ions released into the air of the salt room are akin to those of the fresh ocean air, and the salt elements are particularly beneficial for the  respiratory system. The Thai Hammam Experience ends with Amatara’s Signature Massage for ultimate  relaxation.

For the Hammam itself, Amatara has created an exquisite architectural design to deliver its Thai Hammam programs, a mix of traditional Turkish and Moroccan influences with modern Asian style and luxurious elegance. The Thai elements of the Hammam are built around gentleness and a sense of wisdom referred to in the cascading mosaics, modern, clean geometry, and gold-coloured Turkish fittings and accompaniments.

The Thai Hammam Experience is so memorable and invigorating that it is now included with any wellness package stay at Amatara Resort & Wellness. The program launches officially from March 2016.
